It’s fairly well known that Lions Clubs across the world collect glasses to distribute to those in need in developing countries outside of the United States.
The Kent Lions Club is no different, and collect glasses from optometrist offices across the Kent area. We also have two collection boxes at the Kent Senior Center and at the Children’s Hospital Thrift Store in downtown Kent.
Every couple of months, we come together to sort through these glasses that we have collected in order to prepare them to send them off to the Northwest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) in Olympia, WA. At LERC, the glasses are processed, and those that can be used are sent off to go to those in need. For those glasses, like prescription sunglasses, which cannot be used, they are recycled in an environmentally friendly way.
